Why Direct Democracy?

While Australia is one of the six or seven oldest continuing democracies in the world, our Westminster  system of representative democracy has been more and more compromised by an increasing democratic deficit.

Unless something is done this deficit will neuter democracy itself, turning the people into the servants and not the masters of the system.

The justification of representative democracy is that we choose each one of our representatives for his or her judgement.

Australians should be able to do three things through a citizens’ initiative.  With this they should be able to recall a government which is seen to be just not performing (this could be limited to a particular politician). They should be able to say No to a law which goes aginst their deepest wishes. Further, they should be able to propose a law which they feel should be enacted.
