COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Would every issue go to a national vote?

No. Different Direct Democracy tools apply to different types of decisions. Mandatory Referendums apply to defined major decisions, a People’s Veto provides a process for challenging legislation and a Citizens Initiative allows Australians to initiate an issue for a national vote.

Signature thresholds would be scaled to Australia’s enrolled voting population. A People’s Veto would require a defined level of verified public support before a national vote could be triggered.

An Australian enrolled to vote could initiate a People’s Veto. Other enrolled Australian voters could support it by adding their signatures until the required threshold is reached.

Defined eligibility requirements, signature thresholds, timeframes and signature verification would need to be met before a People’s Veto or Citizens Initiative could proceed to a national vote.

Introducing Direct Democracy through constitutional change would require Australia’s constitutional referendum process. A proposed constitutional change must proceed through Parliament before being put to Australian voters, where it must achieve the required double majority to pass.

The Australian model is based on established Direct Democracy principles and the Swiss system, adapted for Australia. Constitutional and legal expertise will help determine the final thresholds, safeguards and implementation requirements.
